history

A castle fire on the night of October 24th to 25th, 1712, ended the royal court in Strelitz . After the rebuilding of the castle failed, the small hunting lodge in the Glieneke dairy was converted from 1726 to 1731 into a residential castle. 1733 was then in the immediate vicinity of the ruling Duke Adolf Friedrich III. the city of Neustrelitz was founded. Since the development of the new city was not progressing quickly enough for the Duke, he encouraged the settlement through free building sites, timber and tax exemption.

The first town hall - a baroque half-timbered building - was purchased in 1755. It served as the town hall, court hall and town hall and it also received a half-timbered tower. It was demolished in the 19th century for a new town hall.

The second town hall was built from 1841 to 1843 according to plans by Schinkel's student Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel . The two-storey solid plastered building in the classicism style is in three parts on the market square. The central risalit is opened on both floors by round-arched pillar arcades and above it is closed by a mighty balustrade . Vertical, two-storey pillars as pilasters structure the house.

After just a few years, the town hall was extended to Strelitzer Strasse. In 1891 the house partially burned down, but it was rebuilt unchanged.

Neustrelitz remained princely property until 1918. The transfer of communal self-determination and self-administration rights did not take place and there were no elected representatives. In 1912, Neustrelitz received new town regulations with all the rights of an independent town. Thus, in January 1913, a city council could be elected and formed. Only citizens who paid taxes to the city were eligible to vote. Of the approximately 12,000 inhabitants, there were 650 men.

The town hall was completely renovated from 2006 to 2008 as part of general urban renewal . The ocher-colored town hall with the baroque town church from 1778 and the other buildings are part of the ensemble on the baroque, newly designed market square with its eight radiant streets.
