description
The Route 66 Diner is a well-preserved example of a stainless steel diner in Massachusetts. It was built in 1957 as hull number # 532 by Mountain View Diners of Signac , New Jersey and is located in a mixed-use area east of Springfield's downtown business district. It consists of a steel frame -construction, with stainless steel ( English stainless steel is covered) and having horizontal accents in red color. The rounded hipped roof is covered with rubber sheeting and has a steel parapet. The covered entrance at the front - added later in this case - is a typical feature of post-war dinners. A side entrance is on the east side of the diner. Flared pilasters between the windows support the roof. At the rear there is a one-story extension made of concrete, in which the kitchen and toilets are housed.
Inside, the counter extends the entire length and has 17 bar stools. Six table niches along the front offer additional seats. The tables are covered with laminate , the seats with PVC . Many parts are still in their original state, including the brown or beige terrazzo tiles and all steel surfaces.
Historical meaning
Route 66 is one of only six existing Mountain View Diners in Massachusetts and the only remaining one in Springfield. It was the company's penultimate diner, which went out of business in 1957, and for these reasons is of outstanding historical importance.
In 1964 the diner, which was set up in 1957, was registered with the city council as the New Bay Diner Restaurant under the direction of Anthony Viamare. The addition “restaurant” indicates the trend at this time of creating a family-oriented atmosphere and, in particular, of differentiating oneself from the up-and-coming fast food chains. In 1988 Donald A. Roy purchased the diner and renamed it Route 66 Diner. He was referring to the historical course of Route 66 , which has existed since 1926 , which leads from Illinois to California .
