history
The family of the Norwegian Ole M. Olstadt came to Wetaskiwin in 1892 via the newly built Canadian Pacific Railway line , from where they moved on to Duhamel, a small settlement. South of this the family set up homesteads for themselves and relatives and friends from the United States .
After the area had been called the Olstead District for some time, the name was changed to New Norway around 1895 with the arrival of other families, not just Norwegian . In 1903 there was a school, a department store and a forge in the community.
In autumn 1909 the city had to be "moved" by a few kilometers because of the construction of a new railway line. A year later the first village council was elected with MPs Norman Smith, James Willows and Evan Olstad.
