Wetaskiwin [ wɛˈtæskəwən ] is a small town in Alberta , Canada . It is located approximately 70 km south of Edmonton . The name of the city derives from the Cree word wītaskīwin-ispatinaw ("hill of peace").
Wetaskiwin is in what was once the coast of an ocean that covered large parts of Alberta millions of years ago. The northwest area of Wetaskiwin is characterized by sandy hills, while the area in the southeast is flat and rather muddy.
Wetaskiwin is also the name of a state constituency in Canada. Like most rural Alberta, Wetaskiwin tends to be very conservative in voting. In the 2004 election in Canada, the local Conservative candidate received nearly 74% of the vote, while the Liberal candidate received a little less than 12%.
In Wetaskiwin is the Reynolds-Alberta Museum , a large museum on Alberta's industrialization , and the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame .
Wetaskiwin is known for having the highest number of cars sold per inhabitant in Canada. This is largely achieved through collaboration between car dealers along the so-called auto mile , who produce advertising campaigns tailored to the city.
