Martin Lee Sonnenberg (born January 23, 1978 in Wetaskiwin , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who has played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League and Timrå IK in the Elitserien during his active career .
Career
Martin Sonnenberg went on the ice for the Saskatoon Blades in the Western Hockey League during his junior years from 1995 to 1998 . In October 1998 he signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins as a free agent . In his rookie season he came to 44 appearances in the National Hockey League during the regular season, in which he scored two points and seven pointless playoff games. In the same season he also played a few games for the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League . The following season he spent mostly with the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , the new farm team of the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he became a regular player within a short time and scored at least 50 points in two of three seasons. In the 2000/01 season he reached the finals of the Calder Cup with the team for the first time . The series was lost in six games against the Saint John Flames . Sonnenberg played another season in Wilkes-Barre before the Penguins did not renew his contract at the end of the season. In July 2002 he was signed as a free agent by the Calgary Flames . However, he spent the entire season with the Saint John Flames in the American Hockey League before he made his debut for the Calgary Flames in the NHL the following season.
The Canadian was unable to make a breakthrough, so he went on the ice for the Lowell Lock Monsters . In September 2004 he was hired by the Phoenix Coyotes , again as a free agent . For the franchise from the US state of Arizona , he never completed a game, instead Sonnenberg was in action for the Utah Grizzlies and San Antonio Rampage from the AHL. In January 2006 it was given to the New York Rangers in an exchange for Jeff Taffe . A few months later, the winger signed a contract with KalPa Kuopio from the Finnish SM-liiga . There his performance curve showed up again, so that Sonnenberg was obliged by HC Ambrì-Piotta from the National League A after his contract expired in December 2007 . Despite good performance and a point average of around one point per game, his contract was terminated in January 2009 with immediate effect. The Canadian decided to continue his career at Timrå IK from the Elitserien . In the 2009/10 season he was the team's second best scorer. In the quarter-finals of the playoffs he failed with Timrå IK at the eventual master HV 71 Jönköping . Subsequently, the management did not renew his contract. After being out of a club for over a year, Sonnenberg declared his playing career over in March 2011.
