New World Resources is a mining company that operates several hard coal mines in the Czech part of the Upper Silesian mining area ( Moravskoslezský kraj ). The subsidiary OKK Koksovny is a large coke producer and NWR Karbonia is developing two new hard coal mines near Dębieńsko and Morcinek in Poland.

Since 2008 the company has been a public company listed on the London, Prague and Warsaw stock exchanges . Main share holder is the BXR Group of Zdeněk Bakala .

In 2015, NWR sold 8 million t of coal and had 48 Mt of proven reserves (according to JORC standard). Production costs averaged € 66 per ton.

The subsidiary OKD ( Ostravsko-karvinské doly ), which was responsible for the mining of hard coal, filed for bankruptcy in May 2016. In April 2018 it was taken over by the Czech state company Prisko. The Paskov colliery was closed.

Market power

In coke, NWR has a market share of 25% in Central Europe. Steel works in Poland (2), Germany (3), the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia ( Ostrava , Linz , Dunaújváros , Košice , 1 each) are supplied.

The main customers for steam coal are Veolia Energie ČR (29%) and the Dětmarovice power plant (20%). ArcelorMittal Ostrava (25%) and US Steel Košice (17%) are the largest customers for coking coal .

On December 20, 2018, a firedamp explosion with a pit fire occurred in the ČSM mine , as a result of which at least 13 miners died. Most of them were Poles who worked for the Polish company Alpex.
