Zdeněk Bakala

Zdeněk Bakala (born February 7, 1961 in Opava , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech entrepreneur , multimillionaire and investor living in Switzerland .

Life

Bakala emigrated to the USA in 1980 . He studied at the University of California at Berkeley and later at Dartmouth College in Hanover , New Hampshire . He worked for Credit Suisse First Boston in New York, London and Prague.

In the 1990s he worked successfully in the financial sector and in 1994 he founded his own investment company, Patria Finance . In 2000 he sold it to the Belgian KBC Group . In 2004 Bakala bought Karbon Invest , which is active in the Karviná / Ostrauer coal mines ( OKD ) and Moravian mines, among other things . In 2006 Bakala acquired the newspaper Respekt ; in August 2008 he acquired a majority stake in the media group Economia , which publishes the business newspaper Hospodářské noviny , among other things . He is also involved in the Becherovka liqueur brand .

Bakala is married to Michaela, who was Miss Czechoslovakia in 1991 under the name Michaela Maláčová. Bakala has a son from his first marriage. He owns a newly built, luxuriously furnished villa in the municipality of Modrava in the Bohemian Forest . However, his residence is in Geneva, Switzerland .

Public work

Bakala supported the work of art Entropa by the sculptor David Černý on prejudice in Europe, which he created for the Czech EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2009.

In June 2010 it was announced that Bakala had donated a total of 28,500,000 crowns to three political parties during the parliamentary election campaign . The Civic Democratic Party received 15 million crowns, TOP 09 7.5 and Věci veřejné 6 million. Since these three parties were a coalition led by Petr Nečas , publicists and the media referred to this government as the "Bakala coalition".

Together with the Dutch investor Bessel Kok , he took over the Belgian operating company Esperanza bvba, the owner of the Etixx-Quick Step cycling team, in 2010 .

In 2011 he supported the Open Air Music Festival in Trutnov .

In 2011 he appeared as an investor for the computer game Kingdom Come: Deliverance and is the main owner of the studio for the video game development Warhorse Studios .

As the second cycling team, Bakala founded the UCI Continental Team AWT greenway in 2013 .
