The New York City Department of Transportation abbreviated as NYCDOT or just DOT is an agency of the City of New York that is responsible for parts of the city's transportation infrastructure. The headquarters are located at 55 Water Street in the south of Manhattan . Janette Sadik-Khan was commissioned by Mayor Michael Bloomberg on April 27, 2007 to manage the agency . The Authority has about 4,100 employees and an annual budget of about 693 million US dollars .

The authority is responsible for the care and maintenance of the highways , streets, pedestrian paths, as well as some bridges and tunnels in New York City. The DOT is also responsible for the street signs, traffic lights and street lighting in the city. The Staten Island Ferry , the ferry service between Manhattan and Staten Island , is also operated by DOT.

Furthermore, the DOT is the city authority that oversees traffic-related expenses. It grants permits for special vehicles, for example special rights for the disabled and constructions, permits for bus stops and is responsible for transport security and road safety. The DOT also organizes the Adopt a Highway program in New York City.

In total, the DOT is responsible for 787 structures in the city. These include the Brooklyn Bridge , the Manhattan Bridge , the Williamsburg Bridge and the Queensboro Bridge . In addition, there are 25 lifting bridges such as the Broadway Bridge and five tunnels, around 10,000 kilometers of road, almost 20,000 kilometers of pedestrian walkways, 1.3 million street signs, 12,000 traffic lights and 300,000 street lamps. Another focus is the expansion of cycle paths, bicycle parking spaces and the organization of rental bicycles in the city (CitiBike). There is no toll for the use of bridges and tunnels operated by the DOT .
