From November 8, 2008 to March 29, 2009, the fifth New Zealand Football Championship was held. In the final stood Waitakere United and Auckland City .

The system has changed. Everyone only played twice against everyone (14 games) and no longer three times as before. In addition, this time the first four of the table qualified for the play-offs, which were played in the return leg. As in the previous year, the final took place at Douglas Field at Trusts Stadium.
