Communities Newhalen

The Newhalen River is a river in southwest Alaska , west of the northern Aleutian chain .

The 40 km long river forms the outflow of Sixmile Lake , which in turn is fed by Lake Clark . The Newhalen River flows mainly in a southerly direction and flows into Iliamna Lake near the village of Newhalen . The catchment area covers more than 8,830 km². The mean discharge is 365 m³ / s. In the months of July to September, when the snow and glaciers melt, the river carries the highest drainage.

The National Park Administration of Lake Clark National Park operates a counting tower on the Newhalen River at the outflow from Sixmile Lake. Between June 30 and August 6, 2013 230,844 sockeye salmon ( Oncorhynchus nerka ) were counted on their migration upstream to their spawning grounds .
