Newport is a city in Carteret County , North Carolina ( United States ). It had 3,349 inhabitants at the 2000 census.
history
Newport was officially granted town charter in 1866. Although the Newport River parish existed by that name a few decades before, the area was also known as Bell's Corner and Shepardsville in earlier years . The first branches of industry were agriculture and timber, as well as the supply industry for shipbuilding, including turpentine production . During the city's early history, the Newport River was navigable all the way to the small Old-Topsail-Inlet, now known as Beaufort-Inlet, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean .
The city was home to one of Carteret County's first organized churches, the Newport River Primitive Baptist Church, founded in 1778 . The structure burned down towards the end of the American Civil War, but was rebuilt a short time later on Church Street and is still in use today.
In 1858 the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad was completed with the laying of the rails on the 96 mile route from Goldsboro via Newport to Beaufort . There are numerous battlefields, forts and strategic positions of the American Civil War in the city . Newport was occupied by Union forces for most of the war.
Part of the town's housing development is known as the Housing Project and was originally developed as a residential area for the employees and military personnel of the nearby Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point .
politics
The city administration is structured in the form of the council manager system and consists of a mayor, town manager (city manager ) and a five-member city council. Derryl Garner has served as Mayor of Newport since 1978.
Public facilities
The Newport Volunteer Fire Department has been in town since the 1940s and is also responsible for the emergency services.
Newport Elementary School and Newport Middle School are public schools in Newport . The Newport Consolidated School, a twelve-grade school founded in 1926, was demolished in 1966 after construction of a new Consolidated High School for the county, West Carteret High in nearby Morehead City, was completed.
