Nhandu carapoensis is a species of Brazilian tarantula . The spider species was discovered in Mato Grosso do Sul anddescribedby Sylvia Lucas in1983. This species was also the first in the species of tarantula Nhandu described at the same time.

distribution

Most of the specimens (males and females) were discovered by the Instituto Butantan in the municipality of Caarapó in Mato Grosso do Sul . The species name is derived from this community. One male was found in the capital, Campo Grande, and one male each in the communities of Nioaque and Pedro Gomes .

features

The cephalotorax, the opisthosoma, and the femora of the legs are dark brown to black in color. The spider has longer fox-red hairs on the opisthosoma and on the legs from the patella to the metatarsi. The underside of the opisthosoma is lighter in color. The further outwards, the darker the color. The femurs are colored above the same as the cephalotorax. Starting at the femurs, the leg links have a narrow cream-colored ring at the transition to the next link.

The male ( holotype ) has a body length including the bite claws of 56 millimeters. The carapace measures 21 by 20 millimeters. One leg of the first pair of legs is 64 millimeters, one leg of the second 59 millimeters, one leg of the third 57 millimeters and one leg of the fourth (rearmost) pair of legs is 71 millimeters long. The male has no tibial apophyses.

Systematics

Nhandu carapoensis was described by Sylvia Lucas in 1983 as a new species and a new genus. In 1997 Günter Schmidt described another species of Nhandu tripartitus , which, in contrast to N. carapoensis, contains a three-lobed sperm library. In 1989 and 1990 Günter Schmidt received two exuvia from different tarantula owners in Germany. However, he could no longer find out the exact origin of the animals in Brazil. He sent a copy of the prepared sperm library to Sylvia Lucas. She thought the three-lobed sperm library was an anomaly. Günter Schmidt nevertheless described this as a separate species, although he already noted in the description that he was not sure about the status. Ray Gabriel finally synonymized this species with N. carapoensis in 2011 .
