The Instituto Butantan in São Paulo

The Instituto Butantan (in Brazilian Portuguese general Instituto Butantã written and spoken) is a Brazilian biomedical research center in the district of Butantã in São Paulo . It is considered one of the most important scientific centers of its kind and has become famous worldwide for its research into snake venoms and vaccines . The first director was Vital Brazil , a doctor who studied public health problems.

history

The outbreak of the bubonic plague in the port of Santos in 1899 prompted the administration of the state of São Paulo to intervene and seek solutions. A decisive step was taken with the establishment of a laboratory assigned to the bacteriological institute (currently the Instituto Adolfo Lutz ). This is how the institution came into being in 1901, on the previously acquired butantane farm near the center of São Paulo, which became known under the name Instituto Serumtherápico (Serological-Therapeutic Institute).

This followed that the Institut Pasteur in Paris with the production of the then customary anti- plague - serum did not comply. Therefore, Brazil tried to take care of its own production. In the course of the first decades of its existence, butantane soon also produced vaccines against various other diseases. For example against tuberculosis and whooping cough , against cholera , tetanus and diphtheria . Even today, the Butantane Institute, which is subordinate to the State Secretariat for Health in São Paulo, produces all the vaccines it needs to supply the Brazilian population.

However, it became famous for research into snake venom . Among other things, butantane has been developed to combat the life-threatening consequences of snake bites . Research is also being carried out into whether natural substances can be isolated from snake venom and used as a drug against certain diseases, such as pain relievers .

The institute is currently conducting studies and research in the sub-areas of biology , biomedicine , pharmacy and biotechnology . The institute also conducts scientific missions for the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization , UNICEF and the United Nations .

In addition to research, production and scientific training, butantane opens its doors to visitors in a park of 80 hectares consisting of 60% green space. With museums, a reptile and monkey house , the park of the Butantan Institute welcomes more than 300,000 visitors annually.

aims

In addition to the production of serums and vaccines , the institute's primary research focus was on dissemination in science, with the results always bringing international recognition and collaboration.
