Nib Soehendra

Nib Soehendra (born October 1, 1942 as Keng Bin Na in Jakarta ) is a German doctor and university professor. He is considered a pioneer in the field of endoscopic surgery.

Life

Soehendra was born to Chinese immigrants in Jakarta, where he grew up with six siblings. His parents came to Indonesia as refugees. After graduating from high school, he first studied biology for a year before taking up medicine in Hamburg in 1961 . After completing his studies and doing his doctorate, he began in 1969 as an assistant doctor at the Marienkrankenhaus Hamburg , from where he moved to the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in 1973 with his chief physician Hans-Wilhelm Schreiber . After becoming a specialist in 1975 and habilitation in 1976, he was appointed professor at the University of Hamburg in 1981 . From 1989 he headed the department for endoscopic surgery. He also remained director of the department after it merged with the department for medical endoscopy in 1998 to form the clinic and polyclinic for interdisciplinary endoscopy. After his retirement in 2008, he continued his medical practice in private practice.

Soehendra performed numerous endoscopic interventions for the first time, such as endoscopic stenting of the bile duct in 1978 or endoscopic hemostasis in the case of acute esophageal or gastric bleeding. He developed numerous endoscopic procedures and instruments named after him.
