The Niban Rock ( Japanese 二 番 岩 Niban-iwa , German 'number two rock' ; Norwegian Andretoppen 'second summit' ) is a rocky outcrop on the Crown Prince Olav coast in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It rises 13 km southwest of Cape Hinode .
Aerial photographs and measurements of a Japanese Antarctic expedition that lasted from 1957 to 1962 were used to map it. Japanese scientists also used the descriptive naming in 1962, which the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names transferred in 1964 in a partial translation into English. The reason for the naming is that this rock was the second most easterly that the Japanese Antarctic expedition had reached in 1957 while exploring the coast.
