Nicholas James Bullen (other variants: Nik Bullen , Nick Bullen , * 1968 , Coventry ) is an English musician and sound artist . He became known as the founder of the grindcore band Napalm Death .

Life

Bullen was born in Coventry and grew up in Meriden , a village about 10 kilometers from Birmingham . As a teenager he was interested in music. Initially his main influences were British punk bands such as The Damned and Stiff Little Fingers , later hardcore punk bands such as Black Flag , Discharge and Chaos UK followed . In 1981, at the age of 13, he founded Napalm Death and took over bass and vocals . After numerous line-up changes, Justin K. Broadrick came to Napalm Death, with whom Bullen wrote the entire A-side of the album Scum . Bullen, who wanted to take a different path musically, left Napalm Death in 1986. From 1991 to 1995 he was active with Mick Harris in his industrial project Scorn . He also recorded the album Bass Terror in 1994 with Bill Laswell . From the mid-1990s, Bullen was no longer active as a musician, completed a computer science degree and developed online learning software. However, he continued to compose music, which he initially did not publish. From the mid-2000s, he devoted himself to various projects. With Simon Mabbott he released an EP as the electronica project Black Galaxy in 2007 and founded the record label Monium in 2007 . In 2007 he composed the music for the experimental radio play Showdown at the Pig Palace by Mark and Steve Beasley, which was released on CD in 2008 . Bullen has dedicated himself to field recording since the late 2000s . He presented his first results in 2012 at the Supersonic Festival in his hometown of Birmingham, and in May 2013 his solo debut Component Fixations was released on Type Records.
