Scorn is a British industrial band with influences from dub , ambient and downbeat .

history

Mick Harris , drummer of the British grindcore band Napalm Death from 1987 to 1991, was already interested in music during his time with this band. After leaving Napalm Death, he founded the Scorn project with Nicholas Bullen and Justin K. Broadrick - both founding members of Napalm Death. Broadrick left the band after the first album Vae Solis , Bullen after the 1995 album Gyral . Since then Harris has been responsible for all music and lyrics as well as all arrangements. He produces the music in his home studio in Birmingham , which he calls The Box .

After problems with Earache Records , Harris released his albums from 1995 to 1997 under his own label Scorn Records, with Earache still acting as a distributor . In 1997 Harris signed a contract with the Belgian record label KK Records. However, he felt insufficiently supported, so that an argument broke out. Therefore, Harris briefly thought of not recording the contractually intended two albums for KK Records and ending the project. Nonetheless, Zander and Whine were released on KK Records in 1997, and both albums were released again in the same year on Invisible Records. He subsequently released his albums on the German label Hymen Records and the Polish label Vivo Records. He is currently under contract with Combat Records .

The band played twice in the Peel Sessions , on September 20, 1992 and July 10, 1994. Both sessions, however, were never officially released.

Although Scorn consisted only of Mick Harris from 1995, the band was touring regularly . In November 2011 Harris announced that the project was over and that he would take a break and work on new ideas.

On January 17, 2019, the Ohm Resistance label announced that Scorn is back and will release an EP with an album in early 2019. The EP with four new tracks called "Feather" was released on June 7th. The full-length album, Cafe Mor, was released on November 15th.

style

In the beginning the music was a synthesis of elements of heavy metal , ambient, dub and industrial with a dark mood. The focus was on very deep and loud bass frequencies. The first album Vae Solis is an example of the successful symbiosis of industrial and downbeat, not least because of the musical origins of Broadrick, who was also guitarist for Godflesh . Nick Bullen wrote all of the lyrics for the album on his pocket PC , which he always carried with him to write down his ideas.

With the departure of Nick Bullen, Harris completely turned away from all non-electronic elements, and he initially developed the style further in the direction of ambient . The dub sound became even darker and heavier, the music of this phase is z. B. described as "hypnotic, constricted in low frequencies ". Greetings from Birmingham , recorded in 2000, is said to have had a certain influence on the later genre of dubstep .

The band's music is sometimes referred to as industrial hip-hop or electronic dub. Music journalists also created the term isolationism , which Harris always rejected.
