The Nichols rock is an isolated promontory in the West Antarctic Marie Byrd Land . It rises on the west side of Kinsey Ridge , which in turn lies in the middle of the Strauss Glacier .
The United States Geological Survey mapped it using its own surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1959 to 1965. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1974 after Clayton Worthington Nichols Jr., geophysicist at Byrd Station from 1969 to 1970 .
