The Strauss Glacier is a 64 km long glacier in Marie Byrd Land in western Antarctica . It flows between the Ickes Mountains and Coulter Heights to the east of Land Bay , where it joins Land Bay on the Saunders coast .
The United States Geological Survey mapped it on the basis of its own measurements and with the help of aerial photographs of the United States Navy between 1959 and 1965. The designation by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1970 was based on the proposal of the US polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd . It is named after Lewis Strauss (1896–1974), chairman of the United States Atomic Energy Commission , who advocated the use of nuclear energy to explore the Antarctic .
