Nick Smith (born December 24, 1964 in Rangiora ) is a New Zealand politician and in the current government under John Key Minister for the Environment, Climate Protection and the national health insurance ACC. He is a member of the New Zealand National Party .

Live and act

Smith was born in North Canterbury . He attended Rangiora High School and in 1983 received an AFS scholarship, then called the American Field Scholar , and went to Delaware . He received his PhD in civil engineering from the University of Canterbury . Smith is married with four children.

From 1985 to 1986 he worked as a construction assistant in Rangiora County Council , then took over the mandate of councilor in Rangiora County Council by election and also took over the position of the director of Smith Construction from 1987 to 1990 and taught at the University of Canterbury .

He joined the National Party and was chairman of the Young Nationals for one year in 1984 and vice chairman for one year in 1986. From 1988 to 1990 he was vice chairman of the National Division of Canterbury-Westland and became the youngest member of the House of Representatives for the National Party in 1990 by winning the direct mandate for the Tasman Electorate (constituency). In 1996 he took up government responsibility for the first time and held various ministerial offices until he was voted out of National in 1999. When the National Party took over government again in 2008, Smith became Minister for the Environment.
