Rangiora is a city in the Waimakariri District of the Canterbury regionon the South Island of New Zealand . It is the seat of the Waimakariri District Council .
Origin of name
The name of the city means something like “day or place of peace” in the Māori language . This is a reminder of the peace agreement between the Ngāi Tahu and the Ngāti Mamoe , who fought bitterly for many years.
geography
The city is located around 25 km north of Christchurch in the wide plain between the Waimakariri River and the Ashley River . The urban area borders on the southern bank of the Ashley River , which flows into the Pacific Ocean about 11 km east-northeast .
climate
Since the city is a little further inland in contrast to the coastal Christchurch , the summers in Rangiora are a bit warmer and the winters are correspondingly colder. The official maximum temperature ever recorded in New Zealand was recorded on February 7, 1973 at 42.4 ° C in Rangiora .

In the 2013 census, the city had 15,018 inhabitants, 23.7% more than in the 2006 census.

Road traffic
The New Zealand State Highway 71 runs through Rangiora and connects the city to Christchurch via Kaiapoi and New Zealand State Highway 1 . A secondary road branching west at Rangiora connects the city with inland Oxford .
Rail transport
The railway line of the South Island Main Trunk Railway also runs through the city , over which the goods traffic runs in north-south direction along the coast and the passenger traffic from Christchurch is made possible with the TranzCoastal to the north.
Education
The city has several elementary schools and two secondary schools. The Rangiora High School has about 1,650 students. It is one of the largest secondary schools in the South Island. When it was founded by a parliamentary act in 1881, it is also one of the oldest schools in the country. The school first opened on January 28, 1884 and celebrates its 125th anniversary at Easter 2009. She has produced several good rugby and netball players in recent years .

- Several wineries can be visited from Rangiora towards North Canterbury .

- Rangiora boasts of being New Zealand's first and only production site for mead , which is exported to many countries from the city.

The city owns a football club, Rangiora AFC .
Culture
In Rangiora there are two theater companies, the The North Canterbury Musical Society and The Rangiora player as well, a number of music, dance and drama schools. The Regent Theater cinema is located in the building of the historic Rangiora Town Hall .
