Nicky (Narripapa) Yunupingu (* 1982 in Arnhem Land on the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory , Australia , † July 23, 2008 in Gunyangara , ibid) was an Aboriginal of the Gumatj clan in the Yolngu Aboriginal tribe . He was a didgeridoo player and dancer in the Aboriginal rock band Yothu Yindi . He presumably died by suicide .

Life

Little is known about Nicky Yunupingu's early life. His father was the brother of Galarrwuy Yunupingu , an elder of the Gumatj and also a member of Yothu Yindi.

Nicky Yunupingu performed in a traditional ceremony at Gove Yacht Club in Nhulunbuy on July 23, 2008 during a meeting of the Australian Cabinet with his Uncle Galarrwuy Yunupingu . After this dance ceremony, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was presented with a petition on bark. It called for the recognition of land rights of the Aborigines. This form of petition was first chosen by the Yolgnu in 1963 when they submitted the Yolngu Bark petition to the Australian Parliament and this was followed worldwide. Both petitions called for Yolngu land rights relating to the Gove bauxite mine .

After this event in 2008 there were violations of the house rules of this club, whereupon the club management issued house bans. It is unclear whether these related to Nicky Yunupingu as well.

Galarrwuy Yunupingu, who identified the deceased with his brother, later stated that his wife had heard that Nicky Yunupingu had quarreled with his wife in Yirrkala . Galarrwuy Yunupingu's wife picked him up in her car while walking alone on the street.

Later that evening, Nicky Yunupingu and a 23-year-old woman friend of hers broke out under the influence of alcohol in a bar in Gunyangara. In this argument he stabbed her fourteen times with a knife. The woman survived. He was found hanged by his wife. The responsible police assume a suicide.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Rudd expressed his deep regret over this tragic incident and expressed his condolences to the family. The deceased was buried according to the Yolngu sepulchral culture .
