The Gove bauxite mine is located on the Gove Peninsula in northwest Arnhem Land on the east coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory , Australia . In 2010 this mine was one of the five largest bauxite mines in Australia. There is also a bauxite refinery on the mine site.

Mining

The deposit exploration on the Gove Peninsula began in 1952 and 1955, bauxite deposits were discovered. In February 1963, the Prime Minister of the Australian Liberal Conservative Party, Robert Menzies, permitted the mining of large bauxite deposits. This led to protests by the Yolngu Aborigines living there , who had not been asked about the exploitation of their land. They submitted the Yolngu Bark Petition , a petition painted on tree bark , to the Australian Parliament. You were defeated in court. The mining company at that time, however, guaranteed the Aborigines compensation payments and the protection of spiritual sites in the so-called Gove Agreement . Mining began in July 1972 through the Swiss Aluminum Company . It has been owned by Rio Tinto Alcan since 2007 with a mining license covering an area of 22,625.7 hectares . The annual capacity of the mine is 8.5 million tons of ore and that of the refinery is 3.8 million tons of alumina .

On the mine site there is a refinery, a storage building, port and power station for energy generation. In 2009 the mine employed 851 people, 10% of whom were Aboriginal.

In May 2011, an agreement was reached between the Rirratjingu, Gumatj and Galpu Traditional Owners , Northern Land Council and Rio Tinto Alcan for an additional 42 years of mining operations until 2053.

In 2012 there were considerations to reduce bauxite mining. In 2013, Rio Tinto announced that mining would continue.

Gove aluminum refinery

The Gove aluminum refinery produced 2.5 million tons of bauxite ore in 2010. In 2004, US $ 2.3 million was invested in expanding the refinery's capacity to 3.0 million tons, which also resulted in a 30% energy saving.

Infrastructure

The place Nhulunbuy was founded to start mining operations and accommodations were created for the miners . The Gove Penisula area and Arnhem Land are poorly developed in terms of infrastructure. Nhulunbuy can only be reached via a 700-kilometer unpaved road. Before driving on Central Arnhem Road , which leads to Nhulunbuy, a permit must be obtained for the last 460 kilometers. That is why the employees are flown in via Gove Airport . There is also a ship connection.
