Nicolaas Wilhelmus Posthumus (born February 26, 1880 in Amsterdam , † April 18, 1960 in Bussum ) was a Dutch economic historian and archivist .

Life

Born as the son of Nicolaas Wilhelmus Posthumus and Huibertje IJzerman, he first studied law . When the university was founded, he was Professor of Economic History at the Dutch Commercial University in Rotterdam from 1913 to 1921 . From 1914 he was also secretary of the "Dutch Economic-Historical Archive" association in The Hague . In 1922 he became a lecturer at the Letteren en Wijsbegeerte faculty at the University of Amsterdam . In 1932 he founded the “Economic-Historical Library” there.

In 1935, Posthumus founded the Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis (IISG) in Amsterdam , financed by the social democratic workers' insurance “De Centrale”. He wanted to save politically threatened archive and library holdings , especially from Germany, Austria and Spain, which are used for historical socialism research. This included the party archive of the Social Democratic Party of Germany with the estates of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels . The “International Archive for the Women's Movement” was also housed in the rooms.

After the Second World War he founded the Nederlands Instituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie , where he was chairman of the board of directors until 1949.
