Nicolae Iorga ( German: Nikolaus Jorga ; born January 17, 1871 in Botoşani , † November 27, 1940 in Ploieşti ) was a Romanian historian , writer and politician .

Life

After completing his studies in Paris , Berlin and Leipzig , he received his doctorate in 1893 and, at the age of 23, a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy . In the 1900s he developed into the main exponent of Seedorism . In 1910 he founded the National Democratic Party (Partidul National Democrat) together with the theoretician of Romanian anti-Semitism, Alexandru Constantin Cuza . In 1920 he joined the Nationalist People's Party (Partidul Nationalist al Poporului) of Constantin Argetoianu and became its president. From April 18, 1931 to May 31, 1932 he was Romanian Prime Minister. After differences within the party, he founded his Nationalist Democratic Party (Partidul Nationalist Democrat) in 1932 . As a prominent figure in Romanian culture, Iorga enjoyed the trust of the royal house. As a member of a circle of educators, scientists and the military, he supported the scout movement in Romania . Nicolae Iorga was the largest Romanian publisher at the time with around 1,250 published volumes and 25,000 articles.

After publicist attacks on the right-wing extremist Legion of Archangel Michael (also known as the Iron Guard ), he was murdered by legionaries on November 27, 1940. Iorga's grandson is the Medievalist and early modernist Andrei Pippidi .
