Nicolas Andry de Boisregard (* 1658 in Lyon ; † May 13, 1742 in Paris ) was a French physician, worked as a parasitologist, orthopedic surgeon and pediatrician, as well as a writer of enlightenment .

Life

Nicolas Andry was born into a family of relatively poor merchants. He initially studied theology for two years. In 1690 he took the surname (Abbé) Andry de Bois-Regard and went to Reims to study medicine at the local faculty. That was part of the Paris faculty at the time. When this connection was broken by Louis XIV in 1694 , Andry (de Boisregard) was forced to repeat his exams in Paris. He received his doctorate with his dissertation An in morborum cura, hilaritas in medico, obedientia in aegro (roughly: "The relationship between the cheerfulness of the doctor and the obedience of the patient in nursing").

Initially professor of human sciences at the Collège des Grassins , which was part of the old Paris University , he soon became head of the medical faculty and, from 1701, deputy professor at the Collège Royal, now the Collège de France . There he held the chair of medicine from 1717 to 1741. Andry was married three times. He had a daughter with his third wife.

Work and meaning

He became famous for his successful treatment of various parasitic intestinal diseases, which earned him the nickname “worm doctor”. His first book De la géneration des vers dans le corps de l'homme. De la nature et des especes de cette maladie, les moyens de s'en preserver et de la guerir , which he had published in Paris in 1700, earned him the reputation of being the father of parasitology . In 1741 he published a book for parents: L'Orthopédie ou l'art de prévenir et de corriger dans les enfants les difformités du corps and thus created the term orthopedics .
