Nicolas Chaoui

Nicolas Chaoui ( Niqula asch-Schawi ; born June 17, 1912 in Tripoli , † February 17, 1983 in Beirut ) was a Lebanese politician . From 1965 to 1979 he was General Secretary of the Lebanese Communist Party (LKP).

Life

Chaoui came from a family of Greek Orthodox faith. He joined the Communist Party of Syria and Lebanon (KPSL) in 1933. He was the editor of the party newspaper Saut ash-Shaab (Eng. "People's Voice"). In 1934 he was elected to the Central Committee, in 1937 he became Secretary of the Central Committee of the KPSL. After the party split into a Syrian Communist Party (SKP) and a Lebanese Communist Party, Chaoui became a member and secretary of the LKP Central Committee. Between 1948 and 1958, when the SKP and LKP were reunited, Chaoui was a member of the Central Committee and the central party leadership.

From 1958 to 1965 Chaoui was again Secretary of the Central Committee and from 1958 to 1979 a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee and from 1965 to 1979 General Secretary of the Central Committee of the LKP. At the fourth party congress of the LKP in July 1979, George Hawi was elected as the new general secretary and Chaoui as the honorary chairman of the LKP.

As head of the Lebanese delegation, Chaoui took part in the international deliberations of the Communist and Workers' Parties in Moscow in November 1960 and June 1969. In 1978 he visited the GDR with a delegation .
