Nikolaus von Tüngen
Nikolaus von Tüngen († February 14, 1489 in Heilsberg ) was Prince-Bishop of Warmia since 1467.
Life
The name refers to the descent from Tüngen near Wormditt in Prussia (since 1945 Bogatyńskie near Orneta ). Nicholas worked at the Curia , was a canon in Wroclaw and in Warmia .
After the Warmia came under the patronage of the King of Poland in 1466 as a result of the Thirteen Years' War , in which Bishop Paul von Legendorf (1458–1467) was on the side of the Prussian Confederation , the Warmia cathedral chapter kor on August 10, 1467 Nicholas as his successor Pauls von Lengendorf. After the Pope had approved this proposal on November 4, 1468 , Nicholas received the insignia of the new office in Rome.
King Casimir IV, however, sought to enforce another candidate in the prince-bishopric, Vincentius Kielbassa , the bishop of Kulm . This gave rise to a kind of investiture dispute, the so-called Pfaffenkrieg , which escalated militarily in 1478 and was not settled until 1479, when Pope Sixtus IV temporarily transferred Nicholas to Pomerania as Bishop of Cammin . Nikolaus had the support of the Teutonic Order and also won the help of the influential Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus . The Polish king then found himself ready to compromise .
In the following years, Nikolaus rebuilt the Warmia, which was partially devastated by the war, and nominated Lucas Watzenrode as his successor.
