The Lower Saxony Technical University ( NTH ) was an alliance of the three universities of TU Braunschweig , TU Clausthal and University of Hanover . It included the natural science and technical subjects and subject groups of the three member universities. These included the MINT subjects in engineering and natural sciences, architecture, computer science and mathematics.
The university was set up on January 1st, 2009 and was initiated by the then Lower Saxony Minister for Science and Culture, Lutz Stratmann , to create a "Lower Saxony University" from these universities. Braunschweig, Clausthal and Hanover had already founded the “Consortium Technicum” in 2000 in order to form research foci. This was given up in the course of planning a technical university in Lower Saxony.
The seat changed every two years in alphabetical order between the participating universities. Most recently, Erich Barke , President of the University of Hanover, chaired the Presidium and Senate of the Lower Saxony Technical University from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2014. He took over the office from his predecessor Thomas Hanschke , President of the Clausthal University of Technology. From 2009 to 2011 Jürgen Hesselbach , President of the TU Braunschweig, held the office of Chairman of the NTH Presidium.
On October 14, 2014, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture announced, after an evaluation by the Lower Saxony Scientific Commission , that it wanted to dissolve the Lower Saxony Technical University on January 1, 2015. The reason given by the ministry was that a top-down structure such as the Lower Saxony Technical University could not effectively use the expected benefits. In the future, research associations are to take their place, which “would be developed out of science” and take into account the autonomy of the individual universities.
On December 18, 2014, the Lower Saxony state parliament decided to suspend the NTH law from January 1, 2015. This also ends all memberships in the organs of the NTH. The Lower Saxony Technical University was dissolved on December 31, 2015.
