Niels Janniksen Bjerrum

Niels Janniksen Bjerrum (born March 11, 1879 in Copenhagen ; † September 30, 1958 there ) was a Danish chemist .

Life

Bjerrum was the son of the professor of ophthalmology Jannik Petersen Bjerrum (1851-1920). He studied chemistry from 1905 in Leipzig, Zurich (from 1907, with Alfred Werner ), Paris (from 1910) and Berlin (from 1911) and received his doctorate in Copenhagen in 1908 (with Sophus Mads Jørgensen ). In 1912 he became a lecturer at the University of Copenhagen. From 1914 to 1949 he was a professor at the Veterinary and Agricultural College (Landbohøjskolen) in Copenhagen. From 1939 to 1946 he was director there.

He made a particular impression through his work in various areas, including a. about the acid-base concepts and the activity coefficients . He thus made a significant contribution to the better understanding of electrolytic dissociation and developed a theory of strong electrolytes in 1909 and from 1916. Other fields of work included a. the complex salts (especially gold salts), colloid chemistry and the heat capacities of gases.

The Bjerrum length , the Bjerrum error , the Brønsted-Bjerrum equation and the Bjerrum plot (in the German Hägg diagram ) are named after him.

In 1911 he combined spectroscopic and thermodynamic data in the investigation of vibrations of carbon dioxide molecules, assuming the quantization of vibrational degrees of freedom according to Albert Einstein . Soon after, he calculated the line broadening due to rotation in molecules with a dipole shape.

In 1952 Bjerrum was elected to the National Academy of Sciences , in 1948 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Göttingen and in 1954 from the Technical University of Copenhagen.

His son Jannik Bjerrum (1909–1992) was also a chemistry professor in Copenhagen, as was his grandson Niels Bjerrum (* 1940).
