Life
Niels Pedersen Mols was born on March 27, 1859 in Grumstrup near Skanderborg . The parents Peder Nielsen Mols and Ane Karlsdatter were poor small farmers, so that the boy had to work as a farm laborer at the age of eight. However, he had the desire and ability to paint from an early age. At the age of 15, Mols became an apprentice to a master craftsman in Aarhus , where he was also a student at the technical school. From 1880 he studied for four years at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen . He earned his living as a painter, so that in 1883 he was able to make his first trip inland in Denmark. Two works were created, basket maker and a cowshed . He exhibited his pictures every spring in Charlottenborg Palace , so his work soon attracted attention. In 1888 the Nationalgalerie bought his work Rüben , in which a farmer with his son and a team of oxen can be seen at work in the beet field .
In 1895 he received the Neuhausen Prize for his work A Sculptor in his workshop . With public support he was able to travel abroad; so he visited Italy in 1890; At other exhibitions abroad he was also awarded medals in Paris , Chicago and Antwerp .
