Street scene in Nieuw-Nickerie |
Nieuw-Nickerie is the third largest city in Suriname after Paramaribo and Lelydorp . It lies on the border with Guyana at the mouth of the Nickerie River and has 12,818 inhabitants (Census 2012). The majority of the population are descendants of immigrants from India (the so-called Hindustans ) and Java (the so-called Javanese ).
The place is the capital of the Nickerie district . The city's port and trade in general, especially border trade with neighboring Guyana, are important for the economy. On May 12, 2020, the newly built administrative center, the district commissioner in Nieuw-Nickerie, was officially put into use.
history
Originally the place was on the right bank of the river and was known as De Punt . The heyday of the place began after 1850, but then under the name Nieuw-Rotterdam . Due to the very pronounced coastal erosion , this place had to be abandoned in 1870 and rebuilt further inland as Nieuwe Wijk . This settlement had to be cleared as early as 1879. It was then created on the left bank of the Nickerie and was given its current name Nieuw-Nickerie . Today a strong sea dike protects against further erosion.
Border situation and border problems
The border crossing into Guyana is the only significant one in Suriname. There is a ferry to the Springlands on the other side of the Corantijn river .
The Permanent Court of Arbitration , Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague has verkündet- an opinion on the complaint of Guyana on 17 September 2007 on maritime boundary disputes between Suriname and Guyana see also the section of border conflicts in the main article Suriname.
