The Nieuwe Hezelpoort (popularly known as Hezelpoort ) is a listed railway bridge on the west side of the city center of Nijmegen in the Dutch province of Gelderland , which opened in 1879 and crosses the Arnhem – Nijmegen railway line .

The bicycle tunnel gaper

For the construction of a railway line between Arnhem and Nijmegen , a railway embankment had to be built from the Waal to Nijmegen station . Therefore, in 1876, the construction of the bridge as part of the dam began, so that car traffic over the Voorstadslaan would continue. When the railway line went into operation on June 15, 1879, the Hezelpoort, the passage of which is 12 meters wide and 9.2 meters high, was opened. In 1931, an additional bicycle and pedestrian tunnel was built south of the bridge with the name gaper ( German "yawning" ). During the Second World War , so-called " Rommel asparagus " were installed in the road surface . The railway bridge was added to the register of the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed on April 22, 2002 as a Rijksmonument . In 2003, the Snelbinder bicycle bridge , which runs from Nijmegen train station to Nijmegen Lent train station and is intended to connect the city center with the VINEX Waalsprong area, was fastened on the east side . It was opened on May 15, 2004.
