Political career

Griffiths joined the Labor Party at the age of 15 . He served on Edinburgh City Council for seven years in the 1980s . There he chaired the housing committee and also dealt with the issue of homelessness. For the first time Griffiths appeared in the 1987 general election to national elections. He applied for the mandate of the constituency of Edinburgh South , a traditionally conservative constituency. On election day, Griffiths received the largest share of the vote with 37.7%, winning the constituency for the first time for the Labor Party. In the following general election in 1992 and 1997 , he held his mandate and increased his share of the vote. After serving as spokesman for consumer protection for eight years, Griffiths was appointed junior minister in trade and economics in the Labor government under Prime Minister Tony Blair . He was dismissed after 18 months after alleging a plot by senior officials against him and political support for a company in which he had an interest.

Despite losing votes, Griffiths held his mandate in the 2001 and 2005 general election . He was given the position of Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Department of Trade and Industry and was named Deputy Leader of the House of Commons under Jack Straw after the 2005 elections . Following the government's plans to continue the Trident program in 2007, he resigned from this post. Griffiths hit the headlines in 2009 when he was accused of having an extramarital affair with a parliamentary clerk, which he later admitted. At the general election in 2010 , he has not raced for more. His party colleague Ian Murray held the mandate for the Labor Party.
