reception

David R. Adler gave the album in Allmusic 4½ (out of five) stars. According to the reviewer, Juris' improvisation is at a high level and plays foreign compositions like “Estate”, “Falling in Love”, two obscure numbers and six group originals (four of which are his) with a lot of creativity. The author also praises the guitarist's teammates; Pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Steve LaSpina and drummer Jeff Hirshfield “are attentive and quick to react. Two highlights are the eccentric 'Dekooning' and a tasteful bossa nova rendition of 'Estate', which best demonstrate the impressive flexibility of Juris. "

Richard Cook and Brian Morton , who gave the album a three-star rating in their Penguin Guide to Jazz , believe Juris' SteepleChase albums from around 1995 are nicely rounded, “although one might complain about it there is not much special either ”. The titles “Estate” and Markowitz's “Dekooning” on the present album are particularly noteworthy, the latter being “a clever and challenging piece”.
