Night and the City is a duo album recorded in 1996 by American jazz bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Kenny Barron .

The album

The album was recorded live in the small New York club The Iridium . Except for the occasional clatter of cutlery and the applause of the guests, the live character of the album is largely unnoticeable. Haden and Barron mostly play ballads. Waltz for Ruth is a composition by Charlie Haden for his wife, Ruth Cameron.

The album is a continuation of the collaboration between Barron and Haden, which had already started successfully with Roy Haynes on the Grammy nominated album Wanton Spirit the year before.

Charlie Haden, 2007
Kenny Barron in Munich (2001)

Night and the City was nominated in 1999 for a Grammy in the category “Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group”.

The Los Angeles Times wrote: Haden supported Barron with his well-known, down-to-earth sound by listening intensely to the piano lines and responding to every sudden shift in musical direction with his own counterweight development ... The crowd in the packed jazz club savored every moment , listened attentively and responded enthusiastically to every particularly tempting musical moment.

Down Beat (5/98), p. 62, gave the album 4 out of 5 stars and wrote: … the well-chosen songs suggest a romantic, evening setting, enhanced by the friendly clink of glasses and cutlery. Barron and Haden communicate consistently as equal partners ...
