Nippon Series
The Nippon Series ( Japanese 日本 シ リ ー ズ , also: Nihon Series ; officially 日本 選手 権 シ リ ー ズ , Nihon senshuken shirīzu , "Japanese Championship Series "; English Japan Series ) are the finals of the Japanese professional baseball league .
They take place annually in October and November. The best teams of the Central League and the Pacific League meet .
mode
The Nippon Series determines in a maximum of seven games - plus possible draws - the Japanese baseball champions: Whoever wins four games first, wins the championship. The two participants have been played in upstream playoffs, the Climax Series , since 2007 , in which the top three teams in each league take part. Previously there were only in the Pacific League (1973–1985 and since 2004) playoffs; in the Central League until then the league leader from the regular season took part in the Nihon Series.
Home rights in the first two and, if necessary, in the sixth and seventh games of the Nippon Series are held by the Central League team in years with even numbers and by the Pacific League in years with odd numbers. The designated hitter rule (DH rule) is applied according to the host's league affiliation: In a stadium of the Pacific League , DH is played with, in a stadium of the Central League without DH. As in regular season games, a draw is possible. If there is no winner after 15 innings , a game is counted as a tie. From a possible eighth game, there is no limit to the number of innings.
Climax Series
Participation in the Nippon Series has been played in both leagues in the Climax Series ( ク ラ イ マ ッ ク ス シ リ ー ズ , kuraimakkusu shirīzu ) since 2007 . In the Climax Series a game ends - as in the regular season - in the event of a tie after twelve innings.
In a first phase ( Stage 1 , since 2010: First Stage ), the second and third placed in each league play three games against each other. The second of the regular season has home rights. Whoever wins two games first, or a game in the event of two draws, competes in Stage 2 (since 2010: Final Stage ) against the first in the table. Ties are not repeated; in the event of a tie, the second in the regular season qualifies.
Stage 2 consists of six games in the stadium of the winner of the regular season, who has started the series with a win lead since 2008. Also, games that end in a draw are not repeated. Whoever has four wins or accounts first or who is ahead after six games moves into the Nippon Series; in the event of a tie, the league winner of the regular season qualifies.
Historical masters
Historically, the teams of the Central League were more successful than those of the Pacific League in the 20th century, which was mainly due to the record champions Yomiuri Giants , who won 22 titles in 35 appearances. From the Pacific League, the Saitama Seibu Lions took part in the Nihon Series 21 times and won the championship 13 times. In the 21st century, Pacific teams were more successful, after the 2019 Series there is a tie between the leagues: A total of 35 titles each went to the Central League and the Pacific League.
