Swami Nikhilananda (actually Dinesh Chandra Das Gupta ; * 1895 in Bengal , British India , † 1973 in New York City , USA ) was a Bengali Hindu scholar , translator and author.

Life

Swami Nikhilananda became familiar with the teachings of Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda from his devout parents in his youth . He was trained as a journalist at the University of Calcutta . At the same time he came into contact with the Indian freedom movement. However, his life took a different direction through his studies of Hinduism , to which Sri Sarada Devi , the Holy Mother , introduced him. After several years as a member of the Ramakrishna Order , which he spent studying the scriptures and the writings of important representatives of Hinduism, he was seconded to the United States in 1931 as one of the representatives of the order. In 1933 he founded the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Center in New York City , which he directed until his death in 1973.

In the following years Nikhilananda was invited to lectures and discussions about the relationship between religions in the USA. He contributed to the expansion of the literature of the Ramakrishna movement through translations from Sanskrit and Bengali into English and was the center of attraction for people like Margaret Woodrow Wilson , the daughter of former US President Woodrow Wilson , the representative of comparative theology Joseph Campbell , the engineer and inventor Chester Carlson, and the philosopher Lex Hixon , who became his student.
