Niklas Höhne (* 1970 ) is a German climate researcher and expert on national and international climate protection . He is a professor at Wageningen University and heads the NewClimate Institute.

Life

Höhne studied physics at RWTH Aachen and INSA Lyon . In 1997 he completed his studies with a diploma in physics at RWTH Aachen University. From 1998 to 2001 he worked as a member of the UNFCCC Secretariat supporting the international climate negotiations, e. B. on topics of reporting, estimation of future emissions, fluorinated greenhouse gases and international transport. In 2001 he switched to the consulting company Ecofys. In 2005 he received his doctorate from the University of Utrecht with the dissertation "What is next after the Kyoto Protocol - Assessment of options for international climate policy post 2012". From 2009 he was director of energy and climate policy at Ecofys. Together with colleagues, he founded the NewClimate Institute in 2014, a non-profit research institute for climate policy . In 2017 he was appointed Special Professor “Mitigation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions” at Wageningen University.

Act

In his diploma thesis Photothermal Deflection Spectroscopy as a method for characterizing solar cells made of amorphous silicon , Höhne already dealt with the technology of renewable energies. He has written numerous studies and scientific articles on climate policy. Höhne is the “Lead Author” on international climate protection measures in the fourth and fifth assessment reports of the IPCC , which received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Höhne is one of the authors of the UNEP Emissions Gap Report (2010 to 2018), which measures the progress of global climate protection. His work on the burden-sharing of emissions reductions led to the much-cited statement by the IPCC that industrialized countries must reduce their emissions by 25% to 40% by 2020 and 80% to 95% by 2050 in order to be compatible with the target of climate change 2 ° C. He developed the “Climate Action Tracker”, which makes emission reduction proposals from all countries transparent in the context of climate negotiations.

In the public debate about ways out of the climate crisis , Höhne advocates a switch to a post-fossil fuel economy and a schedule for the use of emission-free technologies; For example, with reference to the successes of the California Air Resources Board , he calls for the exclusive use of renewable energies for all power plants built from then on , a ban on the sale of CO 2 -emitting vehicles from the early 2020s and a ban on CO 2 emissions from industrial plants the year 2025.
