Nikodem Bętkowski

Nikodem Felicjan Bętkowski-Prawdzic (born September 27, 1812 in Lisia Góra near Tarnów , † October 19, 1864 in Wieliczka ) was a doctor and politician who was a member of the Austrian Chamber of Deputies in the first legislative period for the Crown Land of Galicia in 1861 .

Life

Nikodem Bętkowski attended school in Bochnia and then studied philosophy and medicine in Lviv . Since he belonged to the secret organizations "Młoda Sarmacja" (Young Sarmatia) and "Stowarzyszenie Polskiej Demokracji" (Association of Polish Democracy) during his studies, he was imprisoned several times. He then moved to Vienna , where he became a doctor of medicine in 1841 with the dissertation Historia medicinae in inclytis Poloniae terris from antiquissimis temporibus usque ad a. Graduated in 1622 . In the following years he practiced in Bochnia and in 1846 became a coroner in Wieliczka. In 1848 he was a member of the Austrian Reichsrat .

After the failure of the revolution of 1848/1849 in the Austrian Empire , a trial against Bętkowski was carried out, which lasted until 1853. During this time he published a manual on pathological anatomy in two parts (1852/1853) and translated medical texts from German into Polish.

In 1861 Bętkowski was elected in Wieliczka as a member of the Galician state parliament, from which he was delegated to the Austrian House of Representatives in the first legislative period. He held this office until his death in 1864.
