Nikolai Kovalyov

Nikolai Dmitrijewitsch Kowaljow ( Russian: Николай Дмитриевич Ковалёв ; born August 6, 1949 in Moscow ; †  April 5, 2019 ibid) was a Russian politician of the United Russia party and head of the Russian domestic intelligence service from 1996 to 1998 .

Life

In 1974 Nikolai Kovalyov became a member of the Soviet secret service KGB . He served in Afghanistan during the Soviet intervention . From July 1996 to July 1998 he was the head of the Russian domestic intelligence service FSB . His successor was Vladimir Putin , the current President of Russia.

In 1997 he was appointed army general and in 1999 he was elected as a member of the State Duma of the Russian Federation . There he was chairman of the Veteran's Affairs Committee.
