Nikolai Yegorowitsch Swertschkow ( Russian: Николай Егорович Сверчков ; born February 1, 1817 in Saint Petersburg , † July 25, 1898 in Tsarskoye Selo ) was a Russian painter .

Life

While working as a civil servant in the economic department of the Russian Interior Ministry (MWD), he already devoted himself to painting and exhibited for the first time in 1839. In 1841 he left the civil service. Inspired by the frequent stay at the breeding station for the Orlov trotters Tschesmenskij, he specialized early on in the representation of horse scenes. This included depictions of the trotters and other horses at parades and pictures of the respective tsars on horseback.

In 1852 he became a member of the Petersburg Academy of Arts with the special designation as a popular artist, in 1855 he was appointed professor by the academy. Stays abroad, awards and honors abroad followed.

From 1862 to 1864 Schwertschkow lived and worked in Paris . Napoleon III bought his painting Return from the Bear Hunt and in 1863 awarded him the title Chevalier of the Legion of Honor for the paintings The Fair and The Train Station . In the same year he received an award in Brussels for his painting Tschichachev returns from the war with Turkey .

  • 1865: Karabagh stallion "Khan" , 1865, Horse Museum, Moscow.
  • 1873: Equestrian portrait in the uniform of the hussar body regiment , oil on canvas, 119.5 × 91.5 cm, Sotheby's London 1993.
  • His picture Tsar Alexei I. Michailowitsch lets his troops pass in review in 1664, which resulted in his appointment as court painter. Until 1882, he often had to depict battles and marches in large-format pictures. This earned him some criticism from his academy colleagues. He also continued to paint pictures of dogs and horses.
  • One of his last known pictures shows the guard crossing the Balkan Mountains in 1879.
  • 1886: Sleigh in a snow storm , oil on canvas, 70 × 53 cm, Van Ham Cologne.
