Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Beketow ( Russian: Николай Николаевич Бекетов , scientific transliteration Nikolaj Nikolayevich Beketov ; * January 1 July / January 13,  1827 greg. In Alfjorjewka; † November 30 jul. / December 13,  1911 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian chemist .

Life

He graduated from Kazan State University in 1849 . After returning to Saint Petersburg, he worked with Nikolai Zinin in his medical laboratory for four years . In 1855 he became a research assistant in the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Kharkiv . From 1859 to 1886 he taught as a professor at this university . In 1886 he moved back to Saint Petersburg, where he worked in the university's chemistry laboratory and lectured at the university for women . In 1890 he gave lectures on "Basics of Thermochemistry " at Lomonossow University in Moscow .

Between 1859 and 1865, Beketow proved that aluminum is able to leach other metals from their oxides at high temperatures . In later years these experiments served as the starting point for the development of aluminothermics .

Honors

The lunar crater Beketov was named after him.
