Bestuzhevsky course
Bestuschewskije kursy ( Bestuschewsche courses ), named after its first director, the historian Konstantin Nikolajewitsch Bestuschew-Rjumin (1829-1897), was the largest higher education institution for women in the Russian Empire from 1878 to 1918, located on St. Petersburg's Vasilyevsky Island .
The professors taught at the renowned educational institution included the psychologist Gustav Speth , the linguists Jan Baudouin de Courtenay and Lew Shtscherba , the chemists Alexander Borodin , Alexander Butlerow and Dmitri Mendeleev , the poet Innokenti Annensky , the botanist Vladimir Palladin , the physiologist Ivan Setschenow , the historians Sergei Fjodorowitsch Platonow (1860–1933), Michael Rostovtzeff and Tadeusz Zieliński as well as the associate professor Vera Jewstafjewna Popowa (1867–1896) - the first Russian chemist.
Well-known graduates were Nadeschda Krupskaja , Olga Forsch , Sofja Voroshilova-Romanskaja , Pelageja Schain , Sofija Parnok and Marshal Piłsudski's first wife Maria Piłsudska.
After the October Revolution , the courses were attached to the St. Petersburg State University .
