Bestushev came from an old noble family . His uncle Mikhail Pavlovich Bestushev-Ryumin was executed as the leader of the Decembrist uprising after its failure. After attending the grammar school in Nizhny Novgorod with graduation in 1847, Bestuzhev began studying at the philological faculty of Moscow University , soon to switch to the law faculty. Bestuschew was impressed by TN Granowski , KD Kawelin and SM Solowjow . After graduating in 1851, Bestuzhev renounced legal activity. In 1856 he became editor-assistant at the Moskowskije Vedomosti (until 1859) and published his own magazine, Moskowskoje obosrenije (Moscow review) (with money from AI Laks ). 1859-1865 he worked with the Otetschestwennye Sapiski .

Bestuschews first essays in the field of Russian history dealt with the work of BN Chicherin and SM Solovyov, where he stood up for the state school. He translated a great deal, particularly Henry Thomas Buckle's two-volume work on the history of civilization in England . 1861–1869 he was editor of the section on Russian and Slavic history in AA Krajewski's encyclopedic dictionary and from 1863–1864 editor of the reports of the Imperial Geographical Society. In addition, he worked on his master's thesis on the Russian chronicles until the end of the 14th century, which he defended in 1868. From 1867 he gave special lectures on the sources of Russian history and on historiography . Since the 1860s he got closer to the Slavophiles , although he had earlier criticized their religious and philosophical conception.

In 1878 the higher courses for women , the so-called Bestushev courses , were opened due to the increasing pressure of the women's movement under Bestuschew's leadership . He remained its leader until 1882. At the same time he was chairman of the Slavic Charity Society.

In 1890 Bestushevsky was elected a Real Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences . He also became an honorary member of the Russian Archaeological Society.

Bestushev died of pneumonia . He was buried in the St. Petersburg Novodevichy Cemetery.
