Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Gubenko ( Russian: Николай Николаевич Губенко ; born August 17, 1941 in Odessa , Ukrainian SSR ; † August 16, 2020 ) was a Soviet and Russian actor , film director and politician of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation .

Gubenko attended the Moscow Film School WGIK , where he graduated from acting class in 1964 and directing class with Sergei Gerasimow and Tamara Makarova in 1970 . He worked at the Moscow Theater of Drama and Comedy on Tanganka . His stage successes included, in particular, the role of the aviator Yang Sun in The Good Man of Sezuan and the title role in the other Brecht production, The Rise of Arturo Ui , directed by Siegfried Kühn .

Gubenko made his film debut in 1964. The following year he received attention in Marlen Khuziyev's I'm Twenty Years Old . In his acting career he took on varied roles from heroic to eccentric characters, including in Andrei Michalkow-Konchalowskis Turgenjew film An Adelsnest (1969), Alexei Saltykov's The Director (1970), Sergei Bondarchuk's They Fought for the Homeland (1975) and Gleb Panfilov's I Please about the word (1976).

In 1972 Gubenko presented his first directorial work with A Soldier Returns from the Front , which was praised for its documentary accuracy. In this film he also took on the main role of Nikolai Maximovich. For his film With Broken Wings (1977) he received the main prize at the Allunionsfestival 1978. In his fourth directorial work, the satire From the Lives of Spa Guests (1981), he also wrote the screenplay for the first time.

In 1985, Gubenko was awarded the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR . From November 1989 to November 1991 he was the successor to Vasily Sakharov as Minister of Culture in the Soviet Union .
