Nikolai Reinhold Friedrich Freiherr von Kaulbars ( Russian Николай Васильевич Каульбарс , Nikolai Vasilyevich Kaulbars; * 3. June 1842 in Saint Petersburg , †  November 20 ( December 3 ) in 1905 ) was a general of the Russian army and military writer .

Life

Kaulbars joined a regiment of hunters and joined the General Staff in 1868 . He later took part in the Russo-Turkish War and was then a member of the Montenegrin Commission for the Regulation of Border Disputes. In 1881 he went to the Russian embassy in Vienna as a military attaché .

In 1886, after Prince Alexander's abdication, Kaulbars received orders to restore Russian influence in Bulgaria . He went to Sofia in October , performed there with great harshness, but did not achieve the goal set. At the end of November he returned to Petersburg and in 1889 became chief of staff of the 6th Army Corps near Warsaw , in 1891 of the military district of Finland and had been a member of the scientific committee of the main staff  in Petersburg since 1899.

His brother Alexander von Kaulbars was also a Russian general.
