The Nikolaikirche in Byczyna (Eng. Pitschen ) in the powiat Kluczborski in the Opole Voivodeship was built at the end of the 14th century.

history

In the place of today's brick church there was a wooden church mentioned in 1283, which fell victim to the Hussites in 1430. At the end of the 14th century a brick church was built, which was taken over by the Protestant community in 1556. From 1694 to 1707 the church was again Catholic, from 1707 until today it was Protestant. 1790–1791 the church was renovated and got a baroque interior . In 1886–1888 the church was renovated again, with the baroque elements being replaced by neo-Gothic elements .

Since the end of the war in 1945, the church has acted as a branch of the Evangelical Augsburg congregation in Konstadt (Wolczyn). The church was entered on April 14, 1964 under the number "801/64" in the list of architectural monuments of the Opole Voivodeship.

The church is located on the northeastern edge of the old town. It is surrounded by new buildings. The church is oriented to the east, in the middle of the west facade is the bell tower.

The church was built as a three-aisled basilica . A two-storey sacristy was added from the north side . The three naves, the choir and both vestibules are spanned with ribbed vaults. The arch thrust of the vaults is stopped by buttresses . The church is covered with gable roofs made of roof tiles. In the middle of the ridge there is a roof turret . The four-story tower was given a new upper part with decorative neo-Gothic hurdles in the 19th century . The roof ridge has been increased.

In the western end of the central nave is the organ choir and a wooden gallery .

The interior is almost exclusively neo-Gothic. It consists of the high altar in the form of a triptych , choir stalls , gallery , sermon pulpit and a stone baptismal font .

There are also older works of art:

  • Gothic crucifix from the 2nd half of the 15th century;
  • Votive picture of Pastor Albrecht Opala († 1566),
  • Baroque oil paintings by unknown painters: Resurrection of Christ and crucifixion.

In the crypt there are tombs of Prince Max von Württemberg (died in Russian imprisonment in 1709 after the lost battle of Poltava ), the Frankenberg family, Pastor Opollius and others. a.
