Nikolaj Kocvár

Nikolaj (born December 19, 1927 in Hanigovce as Mikuláš Kocvár ; † January 31, 2006 in Prešov ) was the metropolitan of Prague of the Czech lands and Slovakia .

Kocvár was ordained a priest on August 5, 1950 and attended the Skola Teologicka duchovna akademia Zagorsk from 1955 to 1959 . In 1959 he was a candidate for the Moscow Theological Academy . He became Archimandrite on February 25, 1965 . On February 28, 1965 he was ordained bishop and he became Bishop of Prešov.

On June 4, 2000, Nikolaj, Archbishop since 1988 , followed Dorotheus in office as Metropolitan of the Czech Republic and Slovakia .

His predecessors as metropolitan were Savvatij Vrabec (1923–1951), Gorazd (murdered 1925–1942) and Dorotheus (1964–1999).
