Dorotej Filip

Dorotej (Dorotheus) (born October 20, 1913 in Ňaňkovo , Khust district ; † December 30, 1999 in Prague ), whose real name was Dimitrij Georgievič Filip , was an Orthodox theologian , priest , bishop and metropolitan of the Czech lands and Slovakia .

Life

Filip, a native of the Carpathian Ukraine , studied Orthodox theology and liturgy at a Russian Orthodox seminary in Leningrad after obtaining his university entrance qualification . He made the perpetual vow , took the religious name Dorotheus (after Saint Dorotheus of Tire ) and became a Hierodeacon. He was then ordained a priest in 1940 and a bishop in 1955 . From 1963 he held the office of archbishop and from 1964 to 1999 the office of metropolitan of the Czech lands and Slovakia .

Dorotej sought ecumenical fellowship with the churches that are united in the World Council of Churches . He had been a member of the Christian Peace Conference for two decades since 1960 and was elected to its working bodies.

After Dorotej died at the end of 1999, Nikolaj succeeded him in the Metropolitan Office in 2000.
